As competition at the inaugural AIBA Youth & Junior World Boxing Championships in Antalya draws towards the medal stages there are still four boxers from the Road to Antalya training camp in the competition.
In an excellent showing for Vietnam, the country’s two Road to Antalya boxers remain unbeaten after a combined total of three bouts. Thi Phuong Pham in the 48kg division and Thi Vy Vuong in the 52kg division – both in the Junior competition – are already sure of at least a bronze medal after making the semi-finals in their respective categories.
Pham eliminated Ireland’s Christine Gargan and Vuong dismissed Russia’s Maria Sokolova in the quarter-finals to keep their medal hopes alive.
Myanmar’s Thet Htar San won two bouts in the 48kg division but was eliminated in the quarter-finals by Kazakhstan’s Nazym Kyzaybay 28:5 today.
Holinirina Ranaivo from Madagascar won one bout in the 48kg division to make the quarter-finals but was also eliminated ahead of the medals by Russia’s Svetlana Dmitrieva. The unequal contest was stopped by the referee with 30 seconds remaining on the clock in the second round after the young Malgasian picked up two standing eight counts.
Benin’s Marie Azondote, competing in the 64kg division faces her quarter-final opponent Lina Maier from Germany today to stay in the running, while Moldova’s Irina Gilca is also set to take to the ring today to contest her quarter-final against France’s Lea Bauderlique.
