Born in Apia, Samoa but a representative of New Zealand, Patrick Mailata began boxing after he injured his knee in rugby league, and just two years after his debut he narrowly lost to Joseph Parker in the New Zealand National Olympic Trials. Mailata comes from a boxing family as his father also competed in the sport, and the three-time National Champion takes inspiration from former Heavyweight star David Tua.
