Fascinating start to Olympic boxing competition

09.08.2008

The boxing competition at the 2008 Olympic Games got off to an enthralling start with Olympic and world champions in mixed form on the opening day of the 16-day tournament in the Worker's Indoor Arena in Beijing, China.

Two-time 75kg world champion Matvey Korobov (RUS) stormed to a 18-6 victory over Sweden's Naim Terbunja in the opening bout of the day before 75kg Olympic champion Bakhtiyar Artayev (KAZ) beat Said Rachidi (MAR) 8-2.

However, the big surprise result of the day saw 81kg world champion Abbos Atoev (UZB) go down to Asian Games champion Dzhakhon Kurbanov (TJK) 11-3 in one of the last bouts of the day.

Meanwhile, Samoa's Farani Tavui has been reported to be in a good and stable condition and will stay in the Chinese-Japanese Friendship hospital for observation after being knocked down in his 81kg bout against Croatia's 2005 world championship silver medallist Marijo Sivolija-Jelica.

Chairman of the AIBA Medical Commission Dr. Charles Butler, who was the officiating ringside doctor during the bout, commented that Tavui was sent to the hospital immediately as a "precautionary measure" and it is expected that he will stay in hospital for a few days under observation.

The 2008 Olympic Games Boxing Competition continues on Sunday with two sessions, the first starting at 13:30 with 54kg and 57kg divisions in action.
