Twenty-two boxers from 15 countries will contest the finals of the 1st AIBA President Cup in Sinjhuang City, Taiwan on Saturday which will feature nine "Olympic finals" following the completion of Friday's semifinals.
Only two divisions - 91kg and +91kg - will not feature two Olympic qualified boxers in its final.
The 48kg final promises to be one of the most entertaining affairs of the finals with Cameroon's Essomba Thomas, winner of the 2nd AIBA Africa Olympic Qualification tournament, due to meet 2007 World Championship runner up and 2004 Olympian Harry Tanamor (PHI) after they beat fellow Olympic opposition in Birzhan Zhakypov (KAZ) 14:11 and Purevdori Serdamba (MGL) 6:4 respectively.
The 51kg final, meanwhile, will be an all Asia affair with Yunusov Anvar (TJK) taking on 2003 world champion and 2007 world championship silver medallist Somjit Jongjohor (THA) after they beat Tulashboy Doniyoriv (UZB) 14:5 and Luis Yanez (USA) 14:1 respectively.
The 54kg division final promises to be an interesting affair with Athens Olympic Games silver medallist Worapoj Petchkoom (THA) taking on Olympic opposition in Samir Mammadov (AZE), who has qualified for Beijing in the 51kg class. Petchkoom beat Khumiso Ikgopoleng (BOT) 18:4 while Mammadov beat Olympic qualifier Hoorshid Todjibayev (UZB) 17:9 in their semifinals.
Athens Olympic Games bronze medallist Bahodirjon Sultonov (UZB) will take on AIBA World Championship Chicago 2007 quarterfinalist Arturo Santos Reyes (MEX) in the 57kg final after beating Hector Manzanila (VEN) 22:19 and Ncholas Okongo Okoth (KEN) 15:5 respectively.
In the 60kg final, Athens Olympic Games silver medallist and 2007 World Championship bronze medallist Song-Guk Kim (PRK) will take on Pichai Sayota (THA) in another all-Asia final. Kim comfortably beat Merey Akshalov (KAZ) 20:7 while Sayota beat Saifeddine Nejmaoui (TUN) 16:9.
Meanwhile, 2007 World Championship bronze medallist Bradley Saunders (GBR) pulled off a superb result in his 64kg semifinal stopping 2004 Olympic champion Manus Boonjumnong (THA) in the fourth round. He will now take on 2007 All-African Games champion Bwalya Hastings (ZAM) who narrowly beat Hamza Hassini (TUN) 9:8 in the semis.
The 69kg final will feature 2005 World Championship light welterweight silver medallist Mahmudov Dilshod (UZB) against 2004 Olympic welterweight bronze medallist Kim Jung-Joo (KOR). Dilshod beat 2007 World Championship welterweight silver medallist Non Boonjumnong (THA) 12:4 while Jung-Joo progressed courtesy of a walk over.
2007 World Championship silver medallist Alfonso Blanco (VEN) will take on Angkarn Chomphupoung (THA) in the 75kg final after beating Deok-Jin Cho (KOR) RET and Vijender (IND) 15:10 in their semis.
And the 81kg final will feature 2007 world champion Abbos Atoev (UZB) against Imre Szello (HUN).
While the 91kg final will not feature any Olympic qualified boxers, Beijing-bound Jose Payares (VEN) will take on Sardor Abdullayev (UZB) in the +91kg final.
The winners on Saturday will walk away with $2,000 in prize money, the runner's up $1,000, while $500 will go to each of the bronze medallists. |
