Boxers bound for Beijing will be more than focused on the semifinals of the 1st AIBA President Cup in Sinjhuang City, Taiwan with 10 all-Olympic match ups confirmed for Friday's last-four encounters.
The 1st AIBA President Cup - created to pay homage to the AIBA President Dr. Ching-Kuo Wu who is successfully reforming the sport of boxing - has a rest day on Thursday following Wednesday's quarterfinals, in order to gear up for the semifinals where boxers will be aiming to maintain their momentum in this final hit out prior to the 2008 Olympic Games.
The 48kg division will see an all-Olympic affair with Essomba Thomas (CMR) taking on Birzhan Zhakypov (KAZ), while Purevdori Serdamba (MGL) up against Harry Tanamor (PHI) after all four boxers successfully negotiated their quarterfinals on Wednesday.
The 57kg class also throws up another all Olympic encounter with Nicholas Okongo Okoth (KEN) facing Arturo Santos Reyes (MEX) while the 60kg division is another which features all Olympic-bound boxers with Saifeddine Nejmaoui (TUN) taking on Pichai Sayota (THA) and Merey Akshalov (KAZ) up against Song-Guk Kim (PRK).
It is the same in the 64kg class with Hamza Hassini (TUN) facing Bwalya Hastings (ZAM) while Manus Boonjumnong (THA) is drawn against Bradley Saunders(GBR).
The 69kg division will see Beijing-bound Non Boonjumnong (THA) take on Mahmudov Dilshod (UZB) while four Olympians - Alfonso Blanco (VEN) v Deok-Jin Cho (KOR) and Angkarn Chomphupoung (THA) v Vijender (IND) - will meet up in the 75kg class.
Not only will these Olympic qualified boxers be looking to score points over their fellow Beijing-bound opponents but a win on Friday will also see them have the opportunity to box-off for the $2,000 on offer to the winners of each weight division. |
