The 1st AIBA President Cup - a tournament paying homage to the AIBA President Dr. Ching-Kuo Wu and his excellent reform of boxing since being elected in November 2006 - opened on Sunday in the Hsinchuang Stadium Taipei County in Sinjhuang City, Taipei.


Many of the world's top boxers are participating in the event, which finishes on May 31, some using the tournament as a final hit-out prior to the Olympic Games in Beijing, China.


A total of 126 boxers will compete across the 11 weight categories with the semifinals and finals to be held after Thursday's rest day on Friday and Saturday respectively.


The AIBA President Dr. Ching-Kuo Wu, who is of Chinese Taipei nationality, has been dynamic in introducing numerous reform measures in the past 19 months in order to reinvent the sport of boxing and its operations.


The AIBA World Championships Chicago 2007 has been a signature event with a record 557 boxers from 101 countries participating. Other new initiatives include the introduction of a Reform Committee, an AIBA Boxing Academy and an overhaul of the format of the  AIBA World Cup, which will make its debut in Moscow, Russia later this year from December 5-15.
