Oceania Olympic Qualifier starts Monday

The Oceania Continental Championships start in Apia, Samoa on Monday offering 11 Beijing Olympic Games qualifying spots as it doubles as the AIBA Oceania Olympic Qualification tournament.


The one and only qualifying tournament in Oceania will see the winners of each weight category qualify for the 2008 Games.


The Samoa Boxing Federation is playing host to the five-day tournament, which will see one day of preliminaries before two days of quarterfinals, the semifinals on Thursday and finals on Friday.


A total of 81 boxers from nine countries are expected to compete with Australia, hosts Samoa and New Zealand expected to be the major contenders for the 11 Olympic qualifying vacancies.
