Pic: Samoa culture opens the AIBA Oceania Olympic Qualification tournament in Apia
Favourites Australia started the AIBA Oceania Olympic Qualification tournament/Oceania Continental Championships in the fashion they hope to continue with three wins from four on the opening day in the Faleata Sports Complex in Apia, Samoa on Monday.
With Australia having entered two teams (along with New Zealand, America Samoa, Tonga and Samoa) in accordance with Oceania Continental statues, two of their boxers made successful starts in the 60kg preliminaries with Brendon Wilson starting proceedings with a RSOC against Fiji's Amlesh Narayan and Anthony Little beating Tonga's Lamalito Moala 32-5.
Last year's Oceania champion and 2006 Commonwealth Games gold medallist Jarrod Fletcher continued the trend with a RSOC against Mathew Michael of Fiji in the 75kg division before 81kg Matthew Corbett was beaten in a classic with Samoa's Taga Vaitale Soifale riding the home support to win 27-17.
The AIBA Oceania Olympic Qualification tournament/Oceania Continental Championshipscontinues on Tuesday at 18.00 (local time) with the first of the quarterfinals. |
