Little known Ufa Deen of Tahiti raised his stock considerably on Tuesday by upsetting New Zealand's Dayne Williams 15:13 in their 57kg quarterfinal on the second day of the AIBA Oceania Olympic Qualification tournament.
After taking an early 3:2 lead, Deen saw Williams fight back to 7:6 ahead before an outstanding third round saw Deen jump out to a 14:8 lead. The six point buffer was too good in the end, with Deen holding on to win 15:13, giving Tahiti its first victory at the tournament.
The defeat was the third for the Kiwis on a relatively tough day. Daniel Parkin (64kg) and Zig Zag Wallace (81kg) would later lose before Reece Papuni (81kg) and Yamiko Chinula (91kg) saved some face with two victories later in the session.
Earlier in the day, Dr. Ching-Kuo Wu met with the Samoa Prime Minister Tuilaepa Sailele Malielegao in an historic visit by the AIBA President. Dr. Wu's presence at the Oceania Olympic Qualifying event marks the first time that an AIBA President has visited Samoa and he took the opportunity to visit a number of sporting facilities on the island and view Samoa's proposal for a venue of the AIBA Oceania Boxing Academy.
Wednesday, meanwhile, sees the second day of quarterfinals AIBA Oceania Olympic Qualification tournament before the semifinals and finals take place on Thursday and Friday respectively.
