Eight countries, four 2007 Pan American Games champions and eight Cubans confirmed their places at the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing, China as 20 boxers qualified for the Olympics by winning their semifinals at the 1st AIBA Americas Olympic Qualification Tournament in Port of Spain, Trinidad and Tobago on Monday.

Three more vacancy spots will be confirmed on the finals day on Tuesday as the 64kg and 81kg divisions offer a third qualification spot and will necessitate a box off while the +91kg class offers only one qualification spot to the winner.

After missing the opening Olympic qualification tournament at the AIBA World Championships Chicago 2007, Cuba have seen eight of their boxers qualify with another possible as 2007 Pan American champion Robert Alfonso Acea is in the +91kg final.

USA's Deontay L Wilder pulled off his second come-from-behind victory in two days in the 91kg class by beating 2007 Pan American Games bronze medallist Rafael Lima 6:5 while 2005 world and 2007 Pan American champion Hernandez Yordanis beat 2007 Pan Am Games silver medallist Everton Lopes (BRA) 14:3 in a 60kg semifinal. Lopes' counterpart and 2007 Pan Am Games champion Pedro Lima lost to John Jackson of the Virgin Islands 19:10 in their 69kg semi.

The four 2007 Pan American champions which have all qualified for Beijing are Cuba's Idel Torriente (57kg), Hernandez Yordanis (60kg), Emilio Correa Bayeux (75kg) and Osmai Acosta Duarte (91kg).

Tueday's 1st AIBA Americas Olympic Qualification Tournament finals will start with the two bronze medal bouts at 18:00 (local time).
