The twins representing USA and Mexico made it a double while the Jackson brothers from the Virgin Islands had to settle for one win from two on a day of family action during the preliminaries at the 1st AIBA Americas Olympic Qualification Tournament in Port of Spain, Trinidad and Tobago on Thursday.
Separated by minutes at birth 18 years ago, Oscar and Javier are striving for Olympic qualification for Mexico and USA respectively with Oscar representing the birthplace of his parents and Javier boxing in the colours of the family's home country. The Molina family moved from Mexico to California three decades ago and while both harboured dreams of representing the Stars and Stripes, Oscar took the opportunity to represent Mexico after missing out at the US trials.
Both made the perfect start to realising their Olympic dream with Oscar beating Denis Thomas (GUY) in the 69kg class 21:1 while Javier ground out a tough 4:1 victory over Myke Carvalho (BRA) in the 64kg division.
Meanwhile, John and Julius Jackson had contrasting fortunes with the former beating Jesse Bodden (CAY) 16:1 in the 69kg class and Julius losing out to Ecuador's Julio Cesar Castillo Torres 10:3 in the 81kg division. All this with their father Julian in the corner giving them that final piece of inspiration.
In another key result, 69kg 2007 Pan American champion Pedro Lima (BRA) had to call on all his class to come from 3:7 (Round 1) and 8:11 (Round 2) down to beat the promising Tureano Johnson (BAH) 14:13, this after drawing level after the third round at 12:12.
Friday sees the first of the quarterfinals at the 1st AIBA Americas Olympic Qualification Tournament with Puerto Rico's Carlos J Narvez taking on Iran Perez Prevot of Cuba in the 48kg class starting at 14:00 (local time).
