Cuban victory in Independence Cup

Cuba beat 12 other countries to win the celebrated four-day Independence Boxing Cup in the Dominican City of Santiago de los Caballeros on Thursday claiming six titles in the process.


Yampier Hernández (48 kg) and Yankiel Lion (54) both lost their opening bouts, however, Bua's other eight boxers all remained unbeaten during the rest of the tournament.


Pan-American champions Emilio Correa (75) and Osmay Acosta (91) repeated their title victories of 2007 while continental champion Robert Alfonso (+91), youth world champion Rosniel Iglesias (64), Carlos Banteur (69) and the newcomer Julio César la Cruz (81). 


Brazil recorded 17 victories and conquered three divisions through Paulo Carvalho (48), Everton Lopes (60) and Robson Concecao (57).  Dominican Republic claimed the remaining two titles through the Pan-American silver medallists Juan Carlos Payano (51) and Claudio Marrero (54). 


Ecuador collected 10 wins, Colombia four and Canada three.
