Forty-four boxers from 19 countries will face off for Olympic qualification spots in the 1st AIBA European Olympic Qualification Tournament semifinals after an exhilarating day of quarterfinals in Roseto Degli Abruzzi, Italy on Wednesday.


Twenty-six Olympic spots are on offer at this opening Olympic qualification event with the silver and gold medallists in the Light Flyweight, Flyweight, Lightweight, Light Welterweight, Light Heavyweight, Heavyweight and Super Heavyweight divisions being joined by the gold, silver and bronze medallists in the Bantamweight, Featherweight, Welterweight and Middleweight classes in Beijing.


The Ukraine and England lead the way with five representatives each in the semifinals followed by Belarus and Hungary with three apiece. Traditional powerhouse Russia is only represented in the semifinals in the 48kg class having only entered two boxers after qualifying nine boxers at the opening qualifying event - the AIBA World Championships Chicago 2007.


A total of 232 athletes from 42 countries started the tournament in this, the first of two European Olympic qualification tournaments. The 2nd AIBA European Olympic Qualification Tournament will take place in Greece from April 7-14.


Forty European boxers have already claimed tickets for Beijing at the first Olympic qualifier so the remaining total of Europe's quota of 51 has been split between its two continental qualification events with 25 vacancies on offer in Greece.


Thursday is a rest day before Friday's semifinals start at 14.00.
