USOC and USA Boxing confirm the current status of their boxers | 01.08.2012 | The International Boxing Association (AIBA) has confirmed that USOC boxers participating in London 2012 have not broken AIBA rules by entering into contracts with professional promoters.
Via a current promoter's website, AIBA learned on Thursday 26 July that some members of the USA Boxing team present at the London 2012 Olympic Games had already entered into a pre-agreement to compete in professional fights.
Acting on Rule 2.4.3 of the AIBA Technical & Competition Rules, boxing's governing body immediately requested clarification on the boxers' eligibility from both the United States Olympic Committee (USOC) and USA Boxing.
In a letter received on Tuesday 31 July, the USOC confirmed, on behalf of both the USOC and USA Boxing, that no member of the USA Boxing team currently participating in the London 2012 Olympic Games had violated Rule 2.4.3.
The letter enclosed a written statement from the professional promoter himself to deny this matter and all 12 boxers participating in the London 2012 Olympic Games for the USA signed a statement which they did not enter any agreement.
AIBA President Dr Ching-Kuo Wu said: "AIBA would like to thank USOC and USA Boxing for their swift action in clarifying this situation. We are committed to ensuring complete transparency and that our rules are adhered to at all times."
AIBA takes this opportunity to express again its commitment to ensuring that its rules are observed and to fight against any kind of rule violation.
