1st AIBA Asia Olympic Qualification Tournament page 02/02 (Day Eight) Results - Gold Medals
Iranian heavyweight Ali Mazaheri claimed the 19th and final Olympic qualifying spot on offer at the 1st AIBA Asian Olympic Qualifying Tournament in Bangkok, Thailand on Saturday after beating Jasur Matchanov (UZB) in the 91kg final.
Mazaheri won easily 14:5 to be the only Iranian to have qualified for the 2008 Olympics at this event but joins compatriot Morteza Sepahvand who qualified at the AIBA World Championships Chicago 2007 in the 64kg class.
Uzbekistan was the most successful country in Bangkok qualifying four boxers, followed by Thailand, Korea and China who qualified three each.

The gold and silver medallists in nine divisions - gold only in 91kg and no Olympic tickets on offer in +91kg - qualified for the Beijing Olympic Games. While a total of 19 boxers qualified at this first Asian qualifying event, a further 19 will qualify at the 2nd Asia qualification tournament in Astana, Kazakhstan from March 15-25. The one Asian Olympic ticket on offer in the +91kg class will be contested in Kazakhstan. |
