Forty four boxers from 14 different countries will be gunning for a Beijing Olympic Games ticket when the semifinal bouts at the 1st AIBA African Olympic Qualifying Tournament in Algiers, Algeria start at 16:00 (local time) on Sunday.
From an entry list containing 96 boxers from 21 countries, only seven countries are no longer in contention of having a boxer qualify at this event after being eliminated during the preliminary round.
The next two days will see 22 semifinal bouts with the 48kg, 54kg, 60kg, 69kg, 81kg and +91kg classes in action on Sunday followed by the 51kg, 57kg, 64kg, 75kg and 91kg divisions on Monday.
Of particularly interest on Sunday will be the second 60kg semifinal where 2000 Olympics bronze medallist Tahar Tamsamani (MAR) is hoping to qualify for a third consecutive Olympic Games. His opponent is Algeria's Hamza Kramou.
Meanwhile, the 1st AIBA Asian Olympic Qualifying Tournament enters its third day of preliminary round action in Bangkok, Thailand.
