Youth World Championships

On the second day at the AIBA Youth World Championships 17-year-old light flyweight boxer Nurbek Ablazov of Kyrgyzstan caused the biggest surprise.

Ablazov, born in Kyrgyzstan on June 16, 1993, has been boxing in Osh, the second biggest city in their country, since 2005. His best performance until today was a gold medal at the 2009 Bishkek Junior Open Championships.

The draw put him against medal contender and AIBA Junior World Champion Koryun Soghomonyan of Armenia in his first bout. The 17 year-old Armenian boxer outpointed and hammered his rivals to claim the gold medal at home in Yerevan last year.

But surprisingly it was Nurbek Ablazov who landed the first punch and led 3:0 after the first round. Soghomonyan did his best to make a comeback in the second and took the lead by 4:3.
Everybody believed the Armenian boxer could get through into the next preliminary round, but Ablazov thought otherwise and equalized the contest to finish 7:7 and edge ahead on the accepted scores with a difference of only one point.

Nurbek Ablazov will take on England's Charlie Edwards for a place in the Top 16 on Wednesday.
