Polish Boxing Federation Commemorates 1980 Crash Victims

Thomas Schomberg and funded by AIBA at the Skra Warszawa sports club grounds.

March 14th marked the 30th anniversary of a tragic plane crash that brought the lives of a great team of boxers and staff members to a halt. The Polish Boxing Association conducted a memorial service for the USA Boxing team at the Church of the Immaculate Conception of St. Mary in Warsaw, Poland after which the Federation's representatives paid homage to the 22 victims at the monument "Down but not out. Lost but not forgotten."


LOT Polish Airlines Flight 007 from NYC's John F. Kennedy International Airport was fatal for all passengers including 22 members of the USA Boxing team: 14 boxers and 8 staff members. The airplane's landing gear malfunctioned when the pilot was attempting to land in Okecie Airport in Warsaw. The boxers were en route to Cracow and Katowice where they were to compete in two dual matches.
