Thirteen Refereeing and Judging Commission members and 30 three-star R&Js passed the AIBA R&J Instructor Course in Trois-Rivières, Canada yesterday. During the course, Pat Fiacco was appointed to the R&J Commission, bringing the group's member count up to 13.
Funded by the IOC Development Fund, the Referee and Judges Instructor course, held from February 22 to 25 at the Police Academy near Bécancour, is the first training session organized by AIBA for three-star referees and judges. The goal of the course is to teach selected R&Js how to be responsible educators so that, once certified, they can train other R&Js in their area thus helping to develop boxing worldwide.
Before going through the refereeing and judging instructor training and taking the exam, the participants, who represented more than 30 countries, attended a management program where their coaching styles were assessed and their management skills improved.
At the training sessions, the participants learned how to evaluate R&Js, went over the methodology of testing for R&Js, learned how to deliver and organize seminars and then went through a debrief and summary of the R&J manual to reinforce their knowledge on the rules and regulations.
At the end, the three-star R&Js took both practical and written examinations based on the new R&J manual to revalidate their three-star ranking and to certify them as instructors so they can train one-star R&Js at the National Federation level and two-star R&Js at the Confederation level. Those who passed the exams received certificates and official AIBA instructor badges.
