AIBA Appeals on Behalf of Obreja

27.01.2010

AIBA declared an appeal on January 23, 2010 to the AIBA Appeal Commission to reduce the sanctions imposed on Mr Rudel Obreja on January  20 to a more reasonable and proportionate period of time.

The appeal was launched in response to the AIBA Disciplinary Commission hearing on the violations committed by the Romanian Boxing Federation (RBF) and Mr Obreja in 2009, ordering the finals of the 2009 Iasi Romanian Cup to be contested without proper protection, violating AIBA Technical & Competition Rules thus putting in danger the health and safety of the boxers.

The AIBA Disciplinary Commission also sanctioned Mr Obreja for failing to respect the terms of his original suspension of 24 months starting August 22, 2008 and for presenting falsified and forged evidence to the Disciplinary Commission during the 2009 RBF proceedings.

The AIBA Disciplinary Commission sanctioned Mr Obreja as follows:

1) A fine of CHF 20,000
2) A suspension of 11 years

AIBA considers the sanction to be so excessive that it is damaging to AIBA's reputation of being a fair and reasonable sports governing body. If AIBA's appeal is accepted, it will have 10 days to file a full submission.
