AIBA Disciplinary Commission Sanctions Obreja and RBF | 22.01.2010 | The AIBA Disciplinary Commission has sanctioned Mr Rudel Obreja for a failure by Mr Obreja to respect the terms of his original suspension of 2 years imposed by the Disciplinary Commission, and confirmed by the Appeals Commission and the Court of Arbitration for Sport, in breach of article 46 of the Disciplinary Code. Furthermore, the AIBA Disciplinary Commission has sanctioned Mr Obreja for ordering that the finals of the 2009 Iaisi Romanian Cup be contested without headguards, a serious violation of the AIBA Technical & Competition Rules which endangered the health of the boxers and therefore a serious breach of article 45 of the Disciplinary Code.
Mr Obreja is also sanctioned for presenting evidence to the Disciplinary Commission during the proceedings which was known to be falsified and forged in an attempt to mislead the Disciplinary Commission and exonerate Mr Obreja, in breach of article 52 of the Disciplinary Code.
Given the serious nature of the infringements, the AIBA Disciplinary Commission has sanctioned Mr Obreja as follows:
1) A fine of CHF 20,000 2) A suspension of 11 years
Mr Obreja's suspension will start at the end of his current suspension as decided by the CAS. The costs of the proceedings shall be borne equally by the RBF and Mr Obreja and any appeal will not stay its enterting into effect.
In relation to the organization of the Romanian Cup boxing tournament on 16-19 February 2009, where certain bouts were contested without the use of protective headguards, in violation of the applicable AIBA Regulations, the AIBA Disciplinary Commission has imposed the following sanctions on the Romanian Boxing Federation (RBF):
1) A fine of CHF 15,000 and a suspension of one month 2) A ban on organizing any competition under the aegis of AIBA until the RBF issues a formal undertaking that it will strictly comply with the AIBA Technical and Competition Rules, particularly with respect to the use of protective headguards, during all competitions organized under its auspices.
