Kuwait Boxing Federation Provisionally Suspended

13.01.2010

AIBA President Dr Ching Kuo-Wu announced in a letter today that the Kuwait Boxing Federation has been provisionally suspended as of January 13th, 2010.

The decision came from the AIBA Executive Committee Bureau following a review of the decisions taken by the International Olympic Committee (IOC) and the Association of Summer Olympic International Federations (ASOIF) toward the sport and Olympic movement in Kuwait.

In accordance with the provisions of the Olympic Charter, the IOC suspended Kuwait's National Olympic Committee on January 1st, 2010 when planned changes to the country's sports legislation, to bring it in line with the principles and rules governing the Olympic Movement, were not finalised by the agreed deadline of 31st December 2009.

"AIBA decided to follow the IOC and ASOIF decisions in order to deliver a strong message that the boxers and members of the Kuwait Boxing Federation should remain independent from the influence of the government and any outside influence," said Dr Wu in his correspondence.

Additionally, Dr Wu addressed letters to Mr Adnan R.W. Ali, AIBA Youth Commission Member and Mr Museeb Mohsen Najem, AIBA Executive Committee Member and AIBA PR & Press Commission Chairman, informing them that as members of the Kuwait Boxing Federation, they have also been provisionally suspended from their duties at AIBA and will no longer be able to attend the AIBA meetings in Xiamen, China later this month.
