Italian gold medallists at the Mediterranean Games 2009
Hosts Italy - featuring superheavyweight Olympic and world champion Roberto Cammarelle and heavyweight world champion and 2008 Olympic Games silver medallist Clemente Russo - claimed topspot in the team rankings after claiming four gold medals at the Mediterranean Games 2009, which finished in Pescara, Italy on Thursday.
Cammarelle and Russo were joined by fellow Olympians Vittorio Parrinello and Domenico Valentino on the top dais of the podium as Italy were followed by France (three gold) and Turkey (two gold) on the overall medal standings.
Both of Italy's heavyweight super stars Cammarelle and Russo both claimed expected victories with Russo defeating Mourad Sahraoui (TUN) 8:3 in the 91kg final while Cammarelle beat Marko Tomasovic (CRO) by WO in the +91kg finals.
Italian success continued when Parrinello and Abdelhalim Ouradi (ALG) went head to head in the 54kg finals with Parrinello winning the gold 5:1 while Valentino won 60kg gold after a tight 9:7 victory against Filip Palic (CRO).
France were led by Olympic bronze medallist Alexis Vastine, who registered an impressive 11:2 victory defeating Driss Moussaid (MAR) in the 64kg final while Olympian Nordine Oubaali won gold after a 9:3 victory against Spain's Francisco Torrijos Portillo competing in his new weight category of 51kg. Jeremy Beccu was the other French gold medallist, defeating Olympian Jose Kelvin de la Nieve (ESP) +3:3 in the 48kg final.
Turkey's victors were Olympian Onder Sipal, who defeated fellow Olympian Mehdi Khalsi (MAR) 6:0 in the 69kg final, while Kerem Gurgen beat Branimir Stankovic (SRB) in the 57kg final. Olympian and AIBA World Championships Chicago 2007 bronze medallist Adem Kilicci collected 75kg silver after losing 7:5 to Rachid Hamani (ALG).
