Olympic bronze medallists knocked out of Med Games | 01.07.2009 | Vincenzo Picardi (ITA), in red, was a suprise casualty in the semifinals
Olympic bronze medallists Vincenzo Picardi from Italy and Turkey's Yakup Kilic both suffered surprise defeats as the semifinals of the Mediterranean Games 2009 were completed in Pescara, Italy on Wednesday.
Picardi stunned the local fans in the 51kg semifinals by going down 19:9 to Olympian and AIBA World Championships Chicago 2007 48kg bronze medallist Nordine Oubaali (FRA). Oubaali goes into the final where he will face Spain's Francisco Torrijos Portillo.
Another surprise was when 2008 Olympic 57kg bronze medallist Yakup Kilic (TUR) lost to AIBA World Championships Chicago 2007 silver medallist Domenico Valentino (ITA) 6:0. It was not all defeat for Olympic medallists. Alexis Vastine (FRA), Olympic bronze medallist, entered the 64kg finals after an 11:7 win against Presidents Cup bronze medallist Hamza Hassini (TUN).
Further Olympians found glory with Jose Kelvin de la Nieve (ESP) successfully entering the finals after defeating Turkish Ferhat Pehlivan +1:1 in the 48kg division. Vittorio Parrinello (ITA) and Abdelhalim Ouradi (ALG) will go head to head for the gold in the 54kg division after respectively winning their semifinal bouts.
Additional success for Italian Clemente Russo, Olympic silver medallist, who entered the finals with little difficulty defeating Ghossoun Mohammad (SYR) 7:2 in the 91kg semifinals. Russo will go up against Mourad Sahraoui (TUN) in the final. Olympians Roberto Cammarelle (ITA), +91kg Olympic gold medallist, and Olympians Marko Tomasovic (CRO) will go head to head in the finals.
