Italians edge closer to gold at Mediterranean Games

Olympic and world champion Roberto Cammarelle (ITA), in blue, is in
fine form at the Mediterranean Games


Olympic and world super heavyweight champion Roberto Cammarelle and world heavyweight champion and Olympic silver medallist Clemente Russo entered the semifinals of the 2009 Mediterranean Games in Pescara, Italy when they both won their quarterfinals on Tuesday.

The two Italians are expected to progress through to the finals with Cammarelle up against 2007 World Championships participant Alen Beganovic (MNE) after beating France's Zied Jouini RSCH R1 in the +91kg quarterfinals. In the other +91kg semifinal 2008 Olympian Marko Tomasovic (CRO) will take on 2007 World Championships participant Memnun Hadzic (BIH).

Russo, meanwhile, will take on Ghossoun Mohammad (SYR) in the 91kg semifinals after beating Michalis Filippou (CYP) 5:0.

Furthermore, Olympic bronze medallist Vincenzo Picardi (ITA) defeated Olympian Cherif Walid by DSQ R3 taking him into the 51kg semifinals were he will meet Olympian and AIBA World Championships Chicago 2007 48kg bronze medallist Nordine Oubaalo (FRA), who defeated Erdal Inanli (TUR) 13:3.

Three Olympians also successfully entered the medal rounds in the 69kg division with Turkish Onder Sipal defeating Jetmir Juci (ALB) 10:1, Hosam Abdin (EGY) beating Bojan Pescic (MNE) 5:0, and Mehdi Khalsi (MAR) defeating Croatia's Borna Katalinic 4:3.
