Record numbers of 722 boxers from 113 countries have preliminarily registered to participate in the AIBA World Championships Milan 2009, which will take place from September 1-12. The first "numerical" deadline in the registration process passed on June 20 with federations having to indicate the number of boxers they expect to compete in Milan along with the team registration form. The official deadline for confirming the names of those boxers falls on July 20 - the "nominal registration deadline".
Countries who have registered a full complement of 11 boxers include: Algeria, Azerbaijan, Belarus, China, Colombia, Cuba, England, Gambia, Ghana, Hungary, India, Ireland, Italy, Kazakhstan, Mongolia, Nigeria, Russia, Slovakia, Turkey, Uganda, Ukraine, USA and Uzbekistan.
These registration numbers do not include the majority number of boxers from the selected federations participating in the AIBA "Road to Milan" program, which includes a 16 day training camp in Assisi, Italy where all costs are paid by AIBA. Therefore, although AIBA anticipates a significant reduction in the number of boxers at the final entry registration, it is predicted that a record number of boxers and federations will still take part in the AIBA World Championships Milan 2009.
Any federations which did not apply to register for the AIBA World Championships Milan 2009 by June 20 will have their application seriously reviewed by AIBA and are not guaranteed entry to the championships since they will have to wait for the final entry status which is due to July 20.
The previous edition of the AIBA World Championships in Chicago 2007 saw 557 boxers from 101 countries participate.
