Two-time Olympian and Beijing Olympic Games bronze medallist Vijender Singh (IND) pulled off an astonishing 10:7 win over 81kg world champion and World Cup winner Abbos Atoev (IZB) in a crucial 75kg quarterfinal on Tuesday, at the 2009 Asia Elite Men's Championships in Zhuhai, China.
Singh, a 2006 Commonwealth Games silver medallist and Asian games bronze medallist caught Atoev, a first round loser at the 2008 Olympic Games, unawares to open an early lead, a lead the 23-year-old did not relinquish. The victory now sees Singh goes on to meet Karipov Ruslan (KGZ) in Friday's semifinals.
In other key results, 64kg world champion and 2008 Olympic Games quarterfinalist Serik Sapiyev (KAZ) stopped Jagat Singh Belal (IND) in the first round while AIBA World Championships bronze medallist and 2008 Olympic Games 48kg quarterfinalist Amnaj Ruenroeng (THA) moved closer to the medal rounds by defeating Tsung-Ju Yang (TPE) 9:1 in the first round of the 51kg preliminaries on Sunday.
Meanwhile, President's Cup bronze medallist and Beijing Olympian Tulashboy Doniyorov (UZB) and Beijing quarterfinalist Jitender Kumar (IND) were both successful in the 54kg quarterfinals defeating Rakhim Zhanov (KAZ) 17:5 and Iderkhuu Enkhjargal (MGL) 10:2 respectively. Iran's 2008 Olympian and President's Cup bronze medallist Ali Mazaheri was also successful in the 91kg quarterfinals beating Jasur Matchanov (UZB) 13:3.
Further success was found for 2008 Olympians Hoorshit Tojibaev (54kg) from Uzbekistan, Iran's Morteza Sepahvani (69kg), Enkhzorig Zorigtbaatar (60kg) from Mongolia, Uzbekistan's Elshod Rasulov (81kg) and Dinesh Kumar (81kg) from India.
Beijing Olympians who failed to advance included Thailand's Sailom Adi (60kg) and Uzbekistan's Rafikjon Sultonov (51kg), while AIBA World Championship Chicago 2007 57kg bronze medallist Li Yang (CHN) surprisingly lost a close quarterfinal against Javkhlan Bariadii (MGL) 7:5.
