Russia tops qualifiers in Yerevan semifinals

A total of 16 countries are represented amongst the 52 boxers who have qualified for Friday's semifinals of the AIBA World Junior Championships Yerevan 2009, guaranteeing themselves a medal after the quarterfinalists were held on Wednesday.

Russia tops the number of semifinalists with nine followed by the host country Armenia with seven, and Cuba and Uzbekistan with five. India, Kazakhstan and Lithuania have four representatives each in the semifinals while the Ukraine (three), Ecuador, Germany and Moldova (two each), and Australia, Georgia, Ireland, Israel and Belarus (one each) round out the number of countries represented in the penultimate stage in AIBA's premier tournament for boxers aged 15 and 16 years of age.

The match of the day saw two of the top favourites in the 57kg class Edgaras Skurdelis (LTU) and Dmitriy Kulakov (RUS) go head to head before Kulakov prevailed 2:1. The Russian junior champion will now face Arlen Lopez Cardoso (CUB) who pipped Malik Nabiyev (KAZ) y accepted scores after the bout finished 4:4.

Meanwhile, Australia's Joseph Nicholls guaranteed only Australia's second medal at this level after easing to a 9:5 win in his quarterfinal against Osman Tolip (TUR).

After a tough preliminary bout, which he won +4:4, Poland's Adrian Plichta couldn't follow it up with a quarterfinal victory after going down to one of the favourites for the 63kg title, Samuel Ordaz Rodriguez (CUB) 7:4.

The bottom half of the 63kg draw saw Russia's Magomed Abdulamagomedov take the honours against Ireland's Chris Mullally 7:2 and local favourite Volodya Hayrapetyan beat Semajay Thomas (USA) 6:3.

Meanwhile, the 66kg favourite Dan Aharono (ISR) will take on another strong contender in Deividas Cekanauskas (LTU) in the semifinals after a well worked 8:3 win over Ireland's Michael Reilly.

Thursday is a rest day in the AIBA World Junior Championships Yerevan 2009 with the semifinals starting at 14:00 local time (09:00 GMT) on Friday.
