Big names exit on day 3 of AIBA World Junior CHs | 25.05.2009 | AIBA World Junior Championships Yerevan 2009 Official Page Live Scoring for the AIBA World Junior Championships Yerevan 2009 on www.aiba.org
The quarterfinalists in the 46kg, 48kg, 50kg, 52kg, 75kg and +80kg weight classes at the AIBA World Junior Championships Yerevan 2009 have been confirmed following the completion of the third day of preliminaries in the Sport Concert Complex in Yerevan, Armenia on Monday.
And one of the top casualties was favourite for the 46kg title Dagoberto Agueron (DOM) who lost to Cuba's Yosvani Silva 6:2. The bout had all the pundits picking a close bout with Agueron looking to repeat his 2009 Pan American Junior Championships victory over Silva, which he won 17:5. However it was Silva who looked more accustomed to the brighter lights of the world championships with a consummate performance.
A fascinating quarterfinal showdown between Silva and another favourite Korun Soghomonyan (ARM), who beat Almaz Tleubergenov (KAZ) 13:1, now awaits on Wednesday. The winner could potentially face another favourite in Magomed Dzhabrailov in the semis if the Russian wins his quarterfinal in what is an incredibly tough side of the draw.
The top favourite in the 48kg class suffered a similar fate as Agueron with India's Gaurav Bidhuri completely outclassing Freddie Ortiz (PUR) by the incredible margin of 7:2. Bidhuri must now fancy himself for a medal considering two other title contenders in Cuba's Silva Yoshany and Housein Baisanghorow of Russia will meet in the quarterfinals after claiming hard fought victories against first day hero Christian Teran Torres (ECU) and Azat Khachatryan (ARM) respectively.

Meanwhile, Sergey Sobylinski continued Russia's excellent AIBA World Junior Championships Yerevan 2009 with an outstanding 14:5 win over Yunior Rivalta Medina of Cuba in the 50kg preliminaries. Sobylinski, a 2008 European Schoolboy champion, proved he has all the qualities to be a serious contender for the world title, however a potential semifinal against favourite Burgut Hodjiboyev (UZB) is on the horizon.
Another favourite for the 50kg title, Namit Bahadur (IND), completed a well-polished 5:0 over Israel's Victor Barak and was happy with his performance. "It was a strong bout, as my opponent was strong, very strong but I think this championship will make an excellent base for the Youth Olympic Games, and if you manage to have a strong appearance here, you'll put in good ground work for the Youth Olympic Games," he said. "I've come to Armenia with an aim to claim a place and return to India with a medal. I'm the champion of India, but a good result here will open a new stage in my career."
The 52kg division featured Russia's first defeat of the tournament when 2007 and 2008 European Schoolboy champion Tigran Uzlyan was disqualified against Yerbolat Seidalliyev (KAZ). Seidalliyev will now face another tricky encounter in the quarterfinals against Carlos Chaves (USA) while Makhlin Stanisla's (ISR) dream run continues after just beating Poland's Kazimierz Legowski 12:11 in the bout of the day.
Moldova's Victor Ialimov completed the one of the most comprehensive victory of the day in the +81kg preliminaries in beating Granic Josip of Croatia 13:1 score. "Though the bout took a long time I managed to claim victory by using my right hand," Ialimov explained. "Granic will be heard more of in the future if he organizes the trainings as is needed. I want to have more victories and if I succeed to claim a gold medal in this championship, I'll be world champion for the first time. I don't want more motivation than this."
