Lithuania's Tautvydas Statkevicius kick started his country's excellent start to the AIBA World Junior Championships Yerevan 2009 as he completed an accomplished 13:7 win over Giorgi Manouyan (USA) in the 54kg preliminaries on Sunday.

With Edgaras Skurdelis pushed hard for a 7:5 win over Yevhenii Parkhomenko (UKR) in the 57kg preliminaries later in the day, Lithuania made it two wins from two to sit ninth equal on the team rankings after two days of competition. Russia tops the standings with five wins from five.
"It was hard to begin the bout, but I managed to take the case in to my hands, and managed to celebrate a victory," Statkevicius said. "Manouyan was a strong opponent. I can't predict how things will go now but I'm hoping for the best."
Meanwhile, the favourite in the 57kg division Arlen Lopez (CUB) accounted for another American with an RSCI R2 in his opening bout against Ricardo Gallegos while USA's Manuel Rojas, one of the favourites in the 60kg class, was victorious with a 15:3 win over Jumar Hunlov (KGZ).

Day three of the AIBA World Junior Championships Yerevan 2009 will see the 46kg, 48kg, 50kg and 52kg divisions back in action long with the 75kg and +80kg classes.  |
