Ecuador delights on opening day of AIBA World Junior CHs

Debutants Ecuador made a successful start as the 46kg, 48kg, 50kg and 52kg weight divisions opened the AIBA World Junior Championships Yerevan 2009 in Armenia on Saturday.

Christian Teran Torres had the honour of opening Ecuador's account, which features four boxers in total, at international boxing at this age group (15 and 16 years of age) and completed it successfully, beating Bourous Torik of Morocco, another country to feature at this level for the first time, 5:0.

A total of 11 countries will make their junior debut at this tournament - Argentina, Botswana, China, Ghana, Iran, Montenegro, Nigeria, Thailand, and Venezuela being the others - as Armenia hosts its first world boxing championships.

It was also a successful start for the 46kg favourite Dagobero Aguero (DOM) who beat Korean national junior champion Gwang Gyun Park 7:3

Meanwhile, while 48kg favourite Feddy Ortiz of Puerto Rico received a bye, 50kg top seed Burgut Hodjiboyev UZB) survived a scare, overcoming little known Maxim Molocov (MDA) 2:1 and will now face another potential tricky encounter in the next round against Alfredo Ramirez (DOM).

Russia's Tigran Uzlyan set the early tone in the 52kg division with an impressive 12:1 win over Korea's Jin Hyeok Son while Israel's Makhlin Stanislav also advanced, beating Liam Nicolson of Australia 7:0.

Sunday will see the 54kg, 57kg, 60kg, 63kg and 70kg divisions in action on day two of the sen day tournament which finishes on May 30.
