The first teams have arrived in Yerevan ahead of the AIBA World Junior Championships Yerevan 2009 which starts on Saturday in the Armenian capital.
A 10-strong squad from Ireland arrived on Monday followed by a full complement of Kazakhstan boxers (13) who were greeted at the Zvartnots airport in Yerevan on Tuesday by a small group of well wishers ahead of the premier event for international boxers aged 15 and 16.
Kazakhstan, which sits fourth on the overall medal tally with 30 medals of which eight are gold (Russia tops the medal tally with 53 including 25 gold), will be looking for more success in Yerevan in what is the seventh edition of the AIBA World Junior Championships (formally called AIBA Cadet World Championships).
"Our team is hungry for success and will make every effort to win some medals at the AIBA World Junior Boxing Championships Yerevan 2009," Beybut Yesjanov, the head coach of the Kazakhstan Junior boxing team, said. "We had an opportunity to visit Yerevan in February, and got acquainted with the Armenian team, and consequently, we are well aware that we will face some uncompromising and strong competition, but our athletes have a great desire to win."
The opening ceremony of the AIBA World Junior Boxing Championships Yerevan 2009 will take place in the Sport & Concert Complex on Saturday at 18:00 (local time) followed by the first session of competition.
More than 300 athletes from over 50 countries are expected to participate in the AIBA World Junior Championships Yerevan 2009, signifying record-breaking numbers for the tournament.
