Significant steps in the history of the Asian Boxing Confederation (ASBC) were taken when the 2009 ASBC Extraordinary General Assembly, chaired by ASBC President Mr. Chang Jianping (CHN) in the presence of AIBA President Dr. Ching-Kuo Wu, took place in Sanya, China on Sunday.

Delegates from 18 member federations of the ASBC opened a new page in Asian boxing, as many key decisions were taken in the interest of ASBC and the development of Asian boxing. The new constitution, which is pursuant to AIBA's Statutes, taking into consideration the status of Asian boxing and the invaluable feedback from EC members, was passed by all delegates. The constitution sets a legal framework for Asian boxing development and will come into effective following its final approval by AIBA.
In addition, the new Executive Committee composition was fixed, and plans for 2009 was approved by the General Assembly. The seven absent member federations expressed their full support to the decisions made during the assembly.
Prior to the extraordinary general assembly, the 4th Asia Task Force meeting was convened. Through this meeting, sound preparations were made for the Assembly, including the ASBC new constitution, the 2009 competition schedule, the 2009 budget, the membership of the ASBC Executive Committee and the Executive Committee Bureau and chairmanship of the seven commissions.
Mr. Jianping, an AIBA Vice-President, made his annual report in which he emphasized the primary task of ASBC in 2009 is to set up an institutionalized and democratized management system, to create an open and transparent competition environment, to promote the popularity of boxing in Asia, and to build a more united and healthy ASBC for Asian boxing's further development.
He also paid tribute to all of Asia's boxers for their outstanding achievements in 2008 and expressed his full gratitude to all persons and organizations involved in the past year of 2008 for their hard work. Mr. Chang also pointed out the difficulties and challenges ASBC still face in the coming year and urged all ASBC member federations to unite closely to work harder for a more prosperous ASBC.
Dr. Wu, meanwhile, highly praised the ASBC Extraordinary General Assembly as he acknowledged that through the Assembly, ASBC member federations were united more closely and a solid foundation was put in place for the further development of ASBC as well as Asian Boxing. The AIBA President had earlier briefed the ASBC on AIBA's work in the past two years and the progress of AIBA's reform and women boxing's involvement in the Olympic Games Program, as well as many other important initiatives including the AIBA Boxing Academy and the World Series of Boxing.
The 2009 ASBC Extraordinary General Assembly is the first general assembly called by the ASBC since its establishment at the 2008 AIBA Executive Committee meeting in Busan, South Korea. Each of AIBA's Confederations will hold a general assembly with Europe the next AIBA Confederation to meet in Madrid, Spain from January 17, 2009. |
