The AIBA World Cup made its debut in 1979 and has seen many formats and competitors over the years.
The legendary Cuban heavyweight (91 kg) Felix Savon has achieved the best results in the AIBA World Cup as a three-times champion in Belgrade (1987), Dublin (1990) and in Bangkok (1994).
Alexander Yakubkin won three medals when he participated in the World Cup for the USSR team (he won two gold (Rome-1983, Seoul-1985) medals and a silver (Montreal-1981)).
Serik Konakbaev, Yakubkin's teammate, won medals in 1979 (63.5 kg) and 1981 (67 kg). Four Cuban athletes have won two gold medals each. Arnaldo Mesa won the featherweight category in 1987 and 1990. Julio Gonzalez claimed his medals in the lightweight category (1987 and 1990). Candelario Duvergel won in 1983 and 1990 (63,5 kg) while Roberto Balado was a champion in 1990 and 1994. Unfortunately, the super heavy weight died in a car crash soon after his second victory. |
