AIBA Youth World Championships - Day 3

Four surprising results came out from Day 3 of the 1st AIBA Youth World Championships Guadalajara 2008.


Four medal contenders are unexpectedly already out of the tournament in the "Unidad Deportiva López Mateos" Gymnastic Complex: Stsiapan Kurda (Belarus), Ulas Furkan Memis (Turkey), Yorley Vallejo (Cuba), and Enver Tuktarov (Ukraine) in the 64 kgs, 54 kgs, 57kgs, and 81kgs weight categories, respectively.


In the afternoon session, Togafao Aieto, from American Samoa, took advantage from the Walk-Over of his opponent, the Belarusian Kurda while one of the most thrilling bouts of the day, saw the victory of Finland's Matti Koota over the Turkish Memis by 8-7. The Scandinavian boxer gained his eight and winning point at the very last second, to the joy of Finnish fans up in the stand.


Two of the favourite boxers for medals in the 81kgs and 57kgs weight divisions came out on the losing side in the evening session. In the 81kgs class, the Ukrainian Tuktarov lost by Russia's Magomedov, whilst in the 57kgs weight category, Cuba's Vallejo didn't make it against Fazliddin Gaibnazarov from Uzbekistan.


Two clashes among some of the best boxers here in Guadalajara took place in the third day of preliminaries. Cuba's  Lazaro Alvarez went down against Russian Magomed Kurbanov in the 54kgs class, while the local Oscar Valdez stormed to a 19-4 victory over Kazakhstan's Berik Koitayev.


The 1st AIBA Youth World Championships Guadalajara 2008 continues on Tuesday with two sessions, starting at 14 and 18. In total, 48 bouts will close the Preliminary session with exciting knock out rounds in prospect.
