AIBA President completes productive visit to Cuba

Picture (1)"Cuba is one of the most important countries in the family of our sport, and has not worked alone for itself," the International Boxing Association (AIBA) president Dr. Ching-Kuo Wu said on Thursday following a 24-hour visit to the famous boxing superpower. 


Dr. Wu, from Taiwan, emphasized the importance of Cuba's contribution to the development of many boxing nations and expressed his desire to use that experience in the continental Academies, which are in the pipeline to be developed by AIBA in the coming years, during meetings with the Cuba Boxing Federation and local sports authorities. 


"We look forward to having the active cooperation of Cuba, which has been sending the most number of coaches to other countries and which boasts technicians of great quality," he said. 


Picture (2)Dr. Wu, who was accompanied on the visit by AIBA Executive Director Mr. Ho Kim and President of the Americas Confederation Mr. Domingo Solano from the Dominican Republic, had the opportunity to meet with members of the Cuban Boxing Federation to explain what AIBA had achieved in the last two years, including the impressive reforms, and new projects such as - the introduction of the AIBA Boxing Academy, the new World League of Boxing, women's boxing in the Olympic program, a new world ranking system, the Olympic Games qualifying process and the preparations for the 2009 World Championships, which will be held in Milan, Italy.


Dr Wu left Havana on Thursday to arrive in Guadalajara, Mexico for the beginning of the AIBA Youth World Championships Guadalajara 2008, which start on Saturday.
