2012 the aim for Turkey at Youth WCHs

21.10.2008

As like a number of other countries the Turkish national boxing youth team will participate in the AIBA Youth World Championships Guadalajara 2008 with the 2012 London Olympic Games in mind.

With the seven-day tournament starting on Saturday, 54kg Furkan Ulas Memis, who lost in the first round of the 51kg class at the Beijing Olympics, will lead an 11-strong squad for Turkey, who finished the last AIBA Under-19 tournament in 2006 (before it changed to become the AIBA Youth World Championships) with one silver medal.

"Memis has progressed a lot in recent years," Turkey coach Cahit Sume said. "He has obtained some excellent recent results with a second at the 2005 European Schoolboys Championships in Russia, first in the 2006 European Juniors in Albania and third in the 2006 World Junior Championships in Istanbul. As champion at the 2007 European Youth Championships in Turkey and at the Brandenburg Cup in Germany we expect him to do very well in Mexico.

However, this tournament is all about development of us and we are looking for a good display from all our boxers in preparation for London in four years."

The high level of importance Turkey has put on the event is reflected with its full complement of boxers.
