The first leg of the World Series of Boxing (WSB) Season IV Finals between Azerbaijan Baku Fires and Cuba Domadores took place in Baku, with the Cubans narrowly winning the night 3-2. Going into the second leg both teams would have been confident of their chances, and indeed both performed incredibly well under much pressure. At the end of the night however, it was the Cuba Domadores, in their debut season who won the WSB Season IV title, by the narrowest of margins.

Golden Girl Championships review

Last weekend saw the end of another quality women's tournament as the Golden Girl Championships in the small town of Boras, Sweden, brought together 54 athletes from ten European nations to compete in the Class A category, whilst B and C draws were provided for boxers with much less experience. The Ukrainian team put on a sensational collective performance during the 16th edition of the AIBA World Boxing Championships in Baku. Its competitors secured four gold and one silver medal at the championships, the biggest haul by any nation at one event in the history of AIBA competitions. Next to the five medals their team achieved, a total of six quota places for the London 2012 Games were obtained. They could send a total of ten athletes to the Olympics with another four places available at the upcoming European Olympic Qualification Tournament in April.

Beijing Olympian and WSB star, 23-year-old Brazilian Everton dos Santos fought against University World Champion, Ukrainian Denys Berinchyk. The Light Welter was the only boxer among the finalists coming from the last 64. Thus the Ukrainian was probably more tired than the South American. The Brazilian athlete dominated the fight in the first three minutes and was leading by 8:3 before both boxers received public warnings in the second round. Lopes kept a four points advantage. The last three minutes brought a real manly fight resulting with a close Brazilian victory: an historical gold medal for the South American country.

China's Olympic Games winner and two-time AIBA World Champion, 30-year-old Zou Shiming is unbeaten since June 2007 and continued his winning streak against Russia's European Champion David Ayrapetyan. His opponent secured a silver medal at the last edition of the championships but Zou Shiming was too strong for the Russian boxer. The Chinese athlete won the contest 15:8 while Korea's current Asian Champion Shin Jong Hoon triumphed over Mongolia's defending AIBA World Champion Purevdorj Serdamba. Shiming and Shin will now dispute the Light Flyweight final.
