The second preliminary day at the World Olympic Qualification Event in Baku, Azerbaijan, saw big wins for emerging boxing nations Haiti and Zambia as the flyweight, bantamweight, light welterweight, middleweight, light heavyweight and super heavyweight boxers took to the ring across two sessions.

The United States’ 2015 Pan-American Games winner Antonio Vargas opened his account with an impressive win over India’s WSB boxer Gaurav Bidhuri that underlined his Olympic credentials at flyweight, before Slovakia’s 2015 European Games bronze medallist Viliam Tanko advanced to the last 32 with a win over Afghanistan’s Mohammad Aref Nazari.

Representing Haiti, Richardson Hitchins controlled his light welterweight bout against Iran’s youngest team member Hadi Makouei, then it was Zambian Commonwealth Games bronze medallist Benny Muziyo’s turn to deliver an inspired performance, beating Norway’s Martin Larsen to keep his Olympic dreams alive. Swiss middleweight Davide Faraci dashed Brazilian Pedro Lima’s hopes of a home Olympics appearance with a combination of strong jabs and durability, then it was defending Olympic Champion Robeisy Ramirez’s time to shine, seeing off a brave challenge from Finnish 18 year-old Arslan Khataev.
